Whale watching is one of the most popular excursions in Sri Lanka.

A variety of marine giants swim around the island: blue whales, orcas, Bryde's whales, humpback whales, fin whales, sperm whales, and other whale species. You can also see dolphins and turtles in their natural habitat.

There are 80 species of whales in the world. Of these, 26 species have been recorded around Sri Lanka. Whales swim off the coast of Sri Lanka year-round.

However, in the south during the off-season, in the stormiest months—May and June—and on certain days with storm warnings, the excursion is not conducted for safety reasons. During the summer months, whales can be observed on the east coast of the island, in Trincomalee. At other times, excursions operate from Mirissa, which has a port where all whale-watching boats depart from.

Answer to the main question: Will we see whales?

Firstly, many companies offer two options:

Option One: You get a 50% refund if you don't see any whales.

Option Two: You can go again the next day for free.

These conditions must be agreed upon in advance. During the peak season (December, January, and February), this is often impossible as all boats are fully booked with tourists.

In practice, the chances of seeing whales are very high. I can only recall a few isolated cases where people were unlucky and no whales were spotted that particular morning.

⚠️ It's important to consider that there are days when the ocean is rougher than usual (more common in the off-season). On such days, some people may experience seasickness. If you are prone to motion sickness, I advise you to bring seasickness tablets.
